Error 404 ComponentPluginLanguage

With this component, you can customise the error 404 page that your visitors can see when they type a wrong url. The customized page contains :

* an explanation text
* a link to your homepage
* a search engine that searches on your website

For each error, a mail is sent to the address you want to tell you. You can also define keywords to avoid some of these mails. For example, if you add the keyword "test", all the dead links with the word test will display the error page to users, but will not send the mail. There is now an admin interface for these keywords.

Since version 1.6 the text of the error page can be changed easily from the admin interface.

Version 1.7 to 2.0a correct errors in the plugin and improve detection of pages in error.

This component is available in French, English, Ukrainian, Russian, Brasilian, Dutch and Czech.

This version is now compatible with the native Joomla SEF. You do not need to change the htaccess file anymore. The redirection is done by a plugin which uses the original htaccess file from Joomla.

This is a great piece of software. In opposition to its direct competitors it ...immediately works, like a charm. Simple in implementation, perfect in results!

Thank you Alain and merci beaucoup :)

After hours of trying to get my own custom errorpage in the content area (using this tutorial http://docs.joomla.org/Tutorial:Crea...404_Error_Page) I ran into this extension.

I was a bit anxious using it reading some of the latest reviews but I wanted to give it a chance.

Installation of the component and plugin was easy. And it works. I now have a custom 404 within my template.

Thanks

This extension conflicted with redirects in ht access and absolutely blocked our server, generating soo many processes that it crashes apache and mysql.

I don't know it its construction follows joomla rules, but be very very careful in using it.

I would not recommend it after having spent one day reconfiguring the server

This extension gave me the headache I don´t want.
Installing it went fine, but then problems started.
After installation I went to check it out in the "Components" menu. Something went wrong there because the screen got blank/white. After a while I was "allowed" to go into plugins manager, but instead of "All" plugins listed as I had set it to, only 20 was found. No matter what I did all screens got blank/white.
I wouldn´t recommend this as it´s obviously give administrators as well, in their own administrator area. ;)
Uninstalling it needed me to remove the plugin and component through ftp, then trying to remove it through the admministrator interface as well. If the eventual db lines was removed this way, I don´t know, but I hope so.

Hi, sorry to read you had headache.
If you had posted on the forums I could help you, and I could solve the bug ... if there is one. Here is the english forum :
http://www.cdprof.com/forum/23-english

I'm using this component on my Joomla 1.7 website and it works without problem. You can test it here :
http://www.cdprof.com

Not sure that what you describe is related to com_error404. Why should a plugin for the frontend limit the display of plugins in the backend ?

If you can't uninstall, it has more chance to be related to rights problems on your server.

If you upgrade from joomla 1.5, after upgrading you have to install the new version of com_error404. You can find on cdprof.com one version for Joomla 1.5 and another for Joomla 1.7.

Again, if you post on the forum, it will be a pleasure to help you.

Best,

Alain

Really good extension!

Wanted to update an older version of it on my site - but the downloadlink and the other links on the author's site are broken.
Could you please provide a working downloadlink?

thx, for his great extension!
Owner's reply

Hi,

I'm upgrading my website to Joomla 1.6, so some links can be broken. I corrected the download link in this page.

Thanks for your review.

Love this component... Couldnt find anything similar that worked as well. Only problem I found was with the email alerts. I get an email anytime someone goes to my websites homepage, haha... but I just disabled that feature and it works fine!

Easy to use, simply go to Parameters and set the page title and error message, turn on the plugin and it works. I was worried because I noticed that an earlier review said it didn't work with SEF but it works on our site so presumably the problem has been sorted out. Give it a try.

The component should returnt HTML-responce code 404!

Otherwise you will see your "Page not found" pages in global Google search results.

Tnx!
Owner's reply

Hi Lufa,

For me, the component returns a 404 error code.
Please tell me more of your problem and why you are thinking it doesn't return a 404 code in the component's forum :

Install the plugin and component, adjust parameters in component to your liking, and it works - error pages that use the template of your site. Easy and beautiful.

Excellent extension! So easy to use and does just what I wanted it to do. Glad I came back to check on its status though because I was using the old version that did not have the front end editing fix.

Thank you!

This is a real NICE and VERY EASY to install extension. In a couple of minutes installed and ready to use. In Plugins do some HTML and see our result as a charm: http://www.networkmagic.nl/nwm-5.html

It even sent out an e-mail (if you like) so you can check on your site where and why this link is broken.

LOVE IT!

This is a great extension. Easy to use and tweak for my own purposes. Probably a little geeky, this whole "create your own 404 error message" but if that is where you are at - this extension will let you do it. And even if you stick with something dull, it will improve the quality of your website.

I added "Yahoo! Slurp" (3) as a keyword to leave off the list. This will make sense once you install. A big thumbs up - guys.

This module worked fine until one of my content editors tried to submit content from the front end. We could no longer submit anything without receiving a 404 error page and the content did not get submitted. I'll have to stop using it because of that.
Owner's reply

Ok, I corrected this bug in version 2.0a.
You can use the cdprof.com's forums to tell me the bugs you find. There is a forum for english speaking visitors.

This is a great component and should be part of Joomla core.

Thank you.

To the JED team:

I hope the title of this review ( Error 404 - Page not found ) will help people find it. At this point if you just type "404" it does not show up, because com_error404 is treated by the search engine as one word.

This is a fine tool to solve a specific problem -- making a customized 404 error page that fits within your Joomla site, maintaining the menus, including a link to the home page, adding a Google search box, and even emailing you to let you know when an error is triggered, so you can fix it if needed. The English in the admin interface could use touching up by a native speaker, but this doesn't affect the viewer's experience at all. Great job!
