Version 1.8 2011-02-04 works with Joomla 1.6 and 1.5 and has simpler configuration.
The plugin uses phpMathPublisher by Pascal Brachet from http://www.xm1math.net/phpmathpublisher/ where you can find help on the syntax, try it out and see some examples. phpMathsPublisher is also used by plugins for DokuWiki and WordPress.
This plugin is an alternative to MimeTeX.
MathPublisher is self-contained, and does not require LaTeX or another server to build the images.
This is the best plugin to insert math fomula inside Joomla article content.
Hope the author will change the parameter labels in the XML file (joomla 1.6 version) so that I can translate it into Chinese language.
Thanks.

Thanks to Ian Holden for the good job! MathPublisher is doing exactly what it promises and delivers nice formulas.
The only minor problem I had were the defaults for the fields joomla_root and joomla_url_root that I overlooked. Using slash (/) instead of "joomla" is likely to work for more users.
