The content canonical plugin resolves the issue with multiply URLs of single article. So if you have component/content/article/32-something.html and something.html, now both will be indexed from one URL (something.html). The exact structure of the canonical URL, depends on your menu structure.

VM Add Canonical is a Joomla system plugin that will automatically add canonical URL links to all of your Virtuemart product pages. These links will all point to a single URL for each product. This will cut down on your duplicate content in search engines and optimize your use of the Facebook Like button, especially if you have products in multiple categories. This plugin should work with any SEF extension and has been tested with 'sh404sef' and 'Virtuemart SEF'. If you experience any difficulties with a different SEF extension please let me know through the support forum. v1.2 fixes a bug where the rel-canonical link would be incorrect for Joomla installations in sub-directories.

The rel=shortlink meta-tags are an effort to reduce the number of short URLs for the same page as well as giving the website owner a certain degree of freedom as to what his shortlinks look like. mod_rel_shortlink is a simple Joomla! module that fetches a short URL for the page it is displayed on and sets either a rel= shortlink, rel=alternate shorter, or rev=canonical meta-tag. The short URL may then be displayed in a module position using mootools to make for a slide effect. To reduce the number of http-request optionally the short-links may be written to a .txt-file. When a page is then requested mod_rel_shortlink first looks through the saved short-links before it asks the URL shortening service.
