Authentication, Email Authentication, Access & Security, Site Access, Email

Extend Joomla! authentication to accept email as username (instead of/in addition to username). You can have both!

My users occasionally forget their usernames. I suspect that your users do too. Heck, I forget my usernames once in a while! Fortunately I never forget my email address. Why must users login with their username when an email address is just as unique? Keep your users coming back with hassle free authentication.

By enabling both this plugin and the Authentication - Joomla! plugin, a user can login using EITHER their username or their email address. Additionally, lost-password requests can accept an email address as well as a username.

By enabling this plugin while the Authentication - Joomla! plugin is disabled, a user can login using ONLY their email address (plus password, of course)

ATTENTION: This plugin does not alter the wording of your login page or your login module. You must implement a simple output override to accomplish the login module label in my attached screenshot. The constants to override are:

Functionality

I'm running 3.9.28 and this simply didn't work. There are no errors in the log files it simply returns a status of 4 in one of the arrays.

Ease of use

If it doesn't work, it ain't easy! Trying to debug it wasn't either.

Support

No answer from the author and the forums are overrun with spam... looks like no one has been there in quite a while.

Documentation

Mostly clear but some things about editing the language files were pretty unclear.

I used this to: When you install 2.3.2 you'll get errors about files not found in /tmp and the language strings are all missing but when you upgrade to 2.4.2 the strings appear.

Functionality

Simply does what it says.
Not just that: it re-uses joomla-core code and thus is very well built!

Ease of use

Simply install the package with 2 plugins. Optionally override some language strings and your done.

Support

Not needed. You do need to know a bit about language overrides and optionally template overrides, though.

Documentation

A short webpage with all needed info. Small improvement could be addition of relevant template overrides: com_users/login and mod_login.

I used this to: let website visitors login with e-mail and password. I disabled username login. Membership pro handles user registration which is why I could disable username login.
