----------
The EasyImageCaption plugin displays caption text for images within Joomla! articles.
It has been developed as an alternative to Joomla!'s built-in javascript caption solution as well as to the JCE editor's caption plugin.
HOW IT WORKS
------------
The EasyImageCaption plugin searches for text specified in an image's ALT or TITLE tag (depending on your plugin settings) to use it as the image's caption. If some text is found, the image will be surrounded by a DIV element, and the caption text will be displayed inside a P element within the DIV, below the image. The DIVs width, margin, and alignment (float) settings are taken from the image.
The captions can be styled through the template's CSS file(s) or through the built-in basic style settings.
The behaviour is very similar to Joomla!'s built-in caption solution, but it does not use any javascript.
REQUIREMENTS
------------
Please note that EasyImageCaption requires PHP5.2+!

v0.3 (2009-08-05)
-----------------
* Enhanced the "Ignore classes" parameter: images will also be ignored, if one of the classes set is assigned to a superior HTML element. This will help users to easily disable EasyImageCaption when experiencing compatibility problems with other plugins.
* Removed compatibility with Very Simple Image Gallery plugin from source code and added the gallery plugin's CSS class to the new "Ignore classes" parameter as default instead.
* Added further "ignore classes" as default for compatibility with The Ultimate Social Bookmarking Plugin.
* Added compatibilty with JUMultithumb plugin.
v0.2 (2009-07-30)
-----------------
* Added option to ignore certain articles, articles of certain sections or articles of certain categories
* Added basic style settings to parameters (is enabled by default, but can be turned off, if you prefer to use the template's CSS file for styling)
* Added compatibility with JoomGallery's JoomPlu plugin (JoomPlu's alignment parameter is recognized; width of caption div can be set separately)
* Added compatibility with Very Simple Image Gallery plugin (EasyImageCaption is automatically disabled within this plugin since it has its own caption function)
* Added multi-language support with English and German language files for backend
* Enhanced calculation of the width of the DIV container (this fixed a rare problem)

Thanks for creating this extension. Works right away, both IE & Netscape.

I was for a long time wondering why there wasn't an easier way to have captions on images and this came along to alleviate that need.
In most cases this plug-in should work handily and the developer was responsive to making a fix to accommodate other plugs (in in my case JUThumbnail 2.2 version - not working with 2.3) that it may conflict with.
Although I don't expect the developer to try and keep up with every add-on that may break as other developers make changes I do appreciate the effort. I'll add this to my list of must have add-ons.

I'm a Joomla! newbie who's creating a news/blogging site. I couldn't believe that joomla has no good captioning program internal to it -- yes, you can use the photo caption function, but as soon as you want to add "hspace", "vspace" "border" to a photo, the photo caption doesn't work.
In the Joomla! help forums some people were offering complicated CSS workarounds to this problem. I didn't want to deal with that.
One person in a Joomla! forum mentioned EasyImageCaption.
I tried it, and really like it. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to do a lot of photo captioning, and doesn't like the JCE editor replacement for TinyMCE.
I don't like JCE because I have a dark background on my page and JCE requires, you guessed it, changes to various CSS files, and creation thereof, for you to see white in the edit box if your page has a dark background.
Anyway, thank you again, or as they say in German -- I believe the author is German,
Vielen Dank!

This is a wonderful plugin that really adds a touch of class to the images on my site. Install was simple, setup was a breeze. The only reason I'm not giving this extension five stars is because some of the documentation could have been clearer on the plugin description area.

Thanks for your review.
I am sorry for the imperfectness of my documentation. I guess this is due to my not-so-good English - will try to improve it.

This plug in is easy to use, works beautifully and feels like it should have been there all along. A natural extension of Joomla's core functionality.
Would be a perfect addition to Joomla 1.6.

As the title states, I second the motion that this EXCELLENT plugin be included in J 1.6! Beautiful! Simple! Easy! The available styling is just fine for me. What more can I say :)
Cheers!

It's obvious that this extension is greatly needed -- finding that you cannot easily add captions to images must come as a shock to new Joomla users. (It sure was a shock to me.) The idea behind this extension is therefore obvious -- but no one had done it before, so congratulations to the developer!
I just installed this extension and, so far, it works just fine. Our site does not have a photo gallery installed, so I can't speak to conflicts in that area. Testing so far is with Firefox 3.x and IE 7.
I was able to modify the appearance of captions by adding a bit of code to the template.css file. However, the fact that one needs to mess with CSS keeps me from giving this extension a rating of "Excellent" -- ideally, users should not have to be knowledgeable about CSS to do at least a little basic styling, e.g., make captions bold or italic or center them under the images. That's not to take anything away from this extension, though: using it is infinitely easier than messing around with the Joomla captions mechanism -- and it apparently works better, too. Thank you Mr. Römer!

Thanks for your review.
I understand the problem of "messing with CSS" you mentioned. So I guess I should add the option to define the styles within the plugin's parameters. Put this on my to to-do list for v0.2.
OMG, why has it taken so long for something like this (and why is the default system so poor)? I have been waiting forever and finally got exactly what I had hoped to have one day. Thank you!
This rocks - install, enable and all your ALT text is now displayed in caption form, styled by your template.
It would be great to have some control over the style, e.g. text size, italics, etc.

Thanks for your positive review.
As you have said, the caption can be styled through the template's CSS file(s). Were you thinking about individual styling of captions in different articles? I may have an idea of how to add this function.
