Introduction

Articles comments

Free of charge solution for comments in Joomla™ core content (articles). Full HTML editor, fast, secure. Now with Joomla! 5 support!

Nested, full HTML comments. Comments can be nested (up to 6 levels deep). Your site’s visitors enter comments using Joomla’s configured WYSIWYG editor; no more typing in raw HTML / bbCode / Markdown or using awkward editors which look out of place. All comments are stored in your site’s database; you own your data.

Fast, scalable and secure. Akeeba Engage is built for speed and hand-tuned to minimise the number and time of database queries. It can easily be scaled to hundreds of thousands of comments. The comments are sanitised on submission either with Joomla’s built in text filters or the widely used, audited HTML Purifier library and post-processed on display to prevent SEO issues with their included links.

Powerful and flexible. Choose which categories or articles should have comments. Close comments per category / article. Optionally auto-close comments after a specific period of time since the article’s publish date. Comment management from the frontend and the backend.

Prevent comment spam. Full support for Joomla’s CAPTCHA system for guest, visitor or all comments. Optional integration with the third party Akismet service, including support for definitive spam and reporting spam back to Akismet.

Semantic and accessible. The HTML output is fully annotated with microdata using the Schema.org schema, fully validated with Google’s Webmaster Tools. Both the frontend and the backend are accessible to screen readers and navigable with a keyboard – Joomla core features and third party extensions notwithstanding.

Integrated with Joomla. Akeeba Engage uses core Joomla permissions. It comes with optional support for Joomla’s Privacy and User Actions Log features. It supports Akeeba DataCompliance.

Customisable. Don’t like how it looks? No problem! Override its output with standard template overrides and its CSS with standard CSS overrides. We even include the SCSS sources to make it easier.

Email notifications. Send email notifications to comment managers and article authors. Email notifications can also be sent to people when their comment receives a reply. Anyone but comment managers can unsubscribe from the notifications, satisfying privacy and email legislation around the world.

Avatars. See who you’re discussing with. Akeeba Engage can display avatars and user profiles using the Gravatar service.

Features

  • Joomla 4 native (Akeeba Engage 3.0 and later versions). Uses the core MVC and Bootstrap 5 styling in the front- and backend, without any third party dependencies.
  • Joomla 3 and 4 support (Akeeba Engage 2.x) to allow for easy migration. Once upgraded to Joomla 4 install Akeeba Engage 3.0 or later.
  • Comments allow for full HTML, edited using the WYSIWYG editor configured in Joomla.
  • HTML filtering for comments either by Joomla itself or using the more robust, heavily audited HTML Purifier library.
  • Comments can be filed by logged in users or guests (configurable with Joomla's permissions).
  • Custom module positions for enriching the comments output without overriding the view templates.
  • Guest users can see a module or a module position to help them log in to file a comment (fully compatible with Akeeba SocialLogin).
  • Control open/closed comments, comments autoclose and comments display globally, per category and per article.
  • Comments are hierarchical, i.e. you can file a comment in reply to another comment.
  • Avatars using the Gravatar service.
  • You can optionally require a CAPTCHA for guest comments, non-special users' comments or for all comments. You can use any CAPTCHA supported by Joomla, installed and enabled on your site.
  • Comments can be checked for spam using Akismet (paid, third party service).
  • Notifications about comments can be sent to managers and optionally the participants of a conversation using customizable email templates.
  • Fully semantic output with Schema.org tagging using microdata in both HTML and AMP outputs.
  • Dark Mode support
  • Integration with Joomla's Privacy (com_privacy) and Akeeba DataCompliance components for GDPR compliance i.e. data export and implementation of user content deletion.
  • Integration with User Actions, logging administrative actions taken on comments.
  • Full support for Joomla caching (Conservative and Progressive).
  • You can customize the comments display with standard Joomla template overrides.
  • You can customize the CSS used for comments display with standard Joomla media overrides. You get the full SCSS source files.

Please note that the minimum system requirements for Akeeba Engage are higher than those for Joomla itself.

Note: Akeeba Engage 3 is actively supported on Joomla! 4 and 5. Akeeba Engage 2 for Joomla! 3 is on security maintenance (no new features or bug fixes will be released).

You have all you need! It is really built with Joomla! core. According to me (I have tested lots of extension for comments) it's the best
Ease of use
Easy. You have to take some time to read docs, but, after that, you clearly know what to do.
Support
The free version doesn't include support. But Nicholas is there, if you need some advice on github
Documentation
Complete and clear. You take a while to read, but then you understand what to do.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your feedback!

Regarding the performance, we have populated our development environments with 300–500 articles, each one having 100–300 comments. We have also created a monstrosity article with over 3,000 comments. Comments are still pulled in a matter of a dozen milliseconds, most of which spent in a single, very simple database query which is using indices for maximum performance. Basically, we've hit the limit of database and code optimisation after more than three dozen rounds of relentless optimisation before even 1.0.0 was released.

Regarding the page rendering speed impact, the comment box uses Joomla's configured WYSIWYG editor. If you are using TinyMCE or, worse, JCE there will be a significant impact because of the way TinyMCE (used in both editors) works. If you are using None or CodeMirror the impact will be far smaller but the editing experience will also suffer (for reference, WordPress uses the equivalent of a None editor for this reason in its comments system). We have experimented using a BBCode or a Markdown editor but the performance improvements were minimal over any other editor while the need for the users to learn a new markup made it harder for them to compose comments.

Regarding the ease of management, you can manage everything from the front- and the backend, there are multiple ways to search for comments and configuration settings are the absolute limit to what Joomla allows (it really doesn't allow adding extra options to content category and articles but we made it kinda do that, pushing the envelope as much as it goes). If you have suggestions please submit your ideas and your use case for them at http://github.com/akeeba/engage/discussions/new. Please note that some ideas cannot be implemented for reasons that have to do with how Joomla itself works or because of practical considerations (e.g. having a full text search would be great, but this requires either having a version of MySQL / MariaDB most commercial hosts don't provide OR using the MyISAM database table engine which makes the comment rendering in the frontend between 2 and 5 times slower; the downsides far surpass any upside which is why we scrapped our plans for this feature).

Regarding customisation, you can do standard Joomla template, layout, language, JavaScript, and CSS overrides. There's nothing hardcoded! Everything can be changed to look the way you want. If you expect a lot of options to change small things in the HTML output, this won't happen. After 17 years writing Joomla extensions I can tell you that there is absolutely no way whatsoever to address all possible use cases and these options make the code unmanageable. We did that mistake with Akeeba Subscriptions ten years ago and we had to discontinue it a year later as it was impossible to maintain. If you want something beyond the options offered, please do an override. That's how Joomla itself is meant to be used.
Functionality
I've used half-a-dozen article commenting tools and this is just magic. No plugins to configure; honours J! ACLs; it just works.
Ease of use
Took a bit of time working through importing some old comments used in older extensions (and a few fiddles with CSS) but very easy
Documentation
As Nick would say, read the &$%! manual (and I found a couple of minor errors). Follow the bouncing ball,: the manual says it all.
I used this to: Allow guests and registered members to comment on my blog; manage the inevitable rubbish (of course) and keep things tidy
Functionality
If you have installed akeeba social login plugin and this extension, you will feel they are so great to use in your website.
Ease of use
It is not easy to setup but akeeba's docs help me customize easily for having a beatiful layout I like.
Support
I use a free version so I cannot have much support from akeeba, but with the very detailed documents, I think the support is no need anymore
Documentation
Akeeba's docs are so detailed, I cannot complain about this. Akeeba's docs help me install and customize this extension in the way I wanna.
I used this to: I use for my clients commenting on my website articles. And with akeeba social login, they are a great combination.
