Akeeba Backup Core is the most widely used open-source backup component for the Joomla! CMS. Its mission is simple: create a site backup that can be restored on any Joomla!-capable server, making it ideal not only for backups but also for site transfers or even deploying sites to your clients' servers.

Akeeba Backup creates a full backup of your site in a single archive. The archive contains all the files, a database snapshot and an installer similar in function to the standard Joomla! installer. The backup and restore process is AJAX powered to avoid server timeouts, even with huge sites. Alternatively, you can make a backup of only your database, or only your files. Akeeba Backup is the reliable, easy to use, open source backup solution for your Joomla! site.

Akeeba Backup 9 is actively supported on Joomla! 4 and Joomla! 5. Akeeba Backup 8 for Joomla! 3 is on security maintenance (no new features or bug fixes will be released).

Powerful but Needs Better Support

Functionality
Akeeba Backup works perfectly! It makes full backups, restores smoothly, and has all the features needed to keep a Joomla site safe.
Ease of use
Super easy to use! Just a few clicks, and the backup is ready. Even beginners can handle it without trouble.
Support
Support is not great. Responses take time, and sometimes you don’t get a clear answer.
Documentation
The documentation is okay but not very detailed. Some parts are confusing, and it could be better explained.
I used this to: I use Akeeba Backup for various websites and my localhost to keep my backup files safe. It has been reliable, but I wish the support and documentation were better.
Owner's reply: Support takes time because it's being replied by the developers of the software. If you are using our support, chances are that you have a problem beyond the trivial that could be addressed by the guidance given in the software itself and/or the documentation. By definition, your ticket would be escalated to us developers.

Regarding clarity of the answer, it depends on the nature of the problem and whether the information we have at our disposal helps us find the root cause efficiently. When the problem is something under our control we will be far more clear and precise in our reply than when it's something outside our control, such as an issue depending on your server's configuration, or an issue with a third party storage provider. If you have a specific ticket in mind please submit a ticket in the Pre-Sales category with the ticket number so I can review it and understand why you have misgivings about your experience.

Regarding the documentation, it's more than 300 printed pages and goes into deep detail on how things work. If you have specific documentation pages in mind please submit a ticket in the Pre-Sales category with their URL and tell me what confused you and what further detail you'd like to see there.

About your beginner-friendly documentation comment, I believe you may have missed the links to the video tutorials (https://www.akeeba.com/videos/1212-akeeba-backup.html). That is the beginner-friendly resource we recommend. The written documentation, by necessity, needs to cover everything making it less suitable for beginners.

About the proactive communication, please keep in mind that overdoing it leads to message fatigue with the opposite than the desirable results. To this end, we limit the number of warnings and similar messages displayed to you, and limit our News articles (also available as an RSS feed) to critical issues. Known bugs which do NOT cause data loss and which can be easily worked around –such as by replacing the restoration script with a newer version– are, therefore, non-critical and do not warrant additional communication.

A+++ This works as described. Backs up your sheeit and pushes it to the cloud. I'm using Dropbox to automatically / daily backup.

Because this plugin is very configurable, there's a lot going on. Fortunately most of the default settings worked for me.

Haven't needed support yet because documentation with help of their self produced Youtube content is great.
