Introduction

User Management, Site Access

Frontend UserManager lets your clients manage users, user groups and access levels directly from the Joomla frontend — without ever giving them access to the administrator backend. No training, no exposed system menus, no support headaches.

Move Joomla user management to the frontend

It works with Joomla, not against it: every change is written straight to the core #__users, #__usergroups and #__viewlevels tables, so the frontend and backend always stay in sync.

Key features

  • Create & edit users — auto-generated passwords, welcome emails via Joomla's MailTemplate, individual or bulk activate / block / delete.
  • Manage user groups — hierarchical tree view, nested indentation, admin-group badges, create / rename / delete.
  • Manage access levels — checkbox interface with select-all / deselect-all, full create and edit support.
  • Custom fields support — any com_fields user fields you create automatically appear in the frontend create / edit form, grouped in cards per field group, with all Joomla field types supported.
  • Search, sort, filter, paginate — fast user list that scales to thousands of accounts.
  • Username = email — optional setting that simplifies registration and login. The included plugin extends this behavior to Joomla's own profile and registration forms.

Two permission modes

Hierarchical mode (default) — a 3-tier system (Frontend Superuser → Admin → No access) based on Joomla's nested-set group structure. Each admin can only manage users and groups within their own branch of the tree. Ideal for multi-tenant setups: schools with multiple branches, organizations with departments, agencies with multiple clients on one site.

Joomla standard mode — uses Joomla's built-in com_users ACL (core.manage, core.create, core.edit, core.delete). Same rules in frontend and backend. Best for flat user structures or when ACL is already configured.

Switch modes at any time — settings are preserved.

Visibility controls

Hide system groups, Super Users, technical access levels and anything else your frontend admins shouldn't see:

  • Hidden from lists — groups hidden from dropdowns and filters.
  • Hidden completely — groups invisible everywhere in the component.
  • Hidden access levels — specific levels not shown in the frontend.
  • Super Users are always hidden automatically.

Included plugin: Username & email sync

The package includes plg_user_userfrontendsyncmail — a user plugin that hides the username field in Joomla's own profile and registration forms and keeps username synchronized with email on every save. Activated automatically on installation.
