RadarWave Encrypted Tracking for AcyMailing
Introduction
AcyMailing measures opens and clicks with an invisible image and with links that carry, in plain text, the email ID and the subscriber ID: sequential numbers that anyone who sees the URL can read, and that are easy to forge to fake opens and clicks.
The plugin is there to comply with the Italian Data Protection Authority (Garante) guidelines on tracking pixels in emails (decision no. 284 of 17 April 2026, compliance by 29 October 2026), which among the technical measures ask for an unintelligible, non-sequential identifier. It does it without modifying AcyMailing: at sending time it replaces the numbers with an encrypted code, different for every email, and decodes it when the open or click comes in.
The guidelines apply Article 122 of the Italian Privacy Code, which transposes Article 5(3) of the EU ePrivacy Directive 2002/58/EC: the European Data Protection Board (EDPB) Guidelines 2/2023 confirm that it also covers tracking pixels and tracking links in emails. An encrypted code in place of the numbers is also a measure of data protection by design and of security of processing, as Articles 25 and 32 of the GDPR require, so it helps anyone who sends newsletters anywhere in the EU.
What it does
- AES-256-GCM code with a random part: two emails to the same subscriber get different codes
- Key derived from your site secrets, nothing to configure
- A forged URL records nothing, and the link still leads to the right page
- Links in emails sent before installation keep counting
- Copies itself back after an AcyMailing update
- If encryption fails the email goes out anyway: no lost sends
Requirements
- Joomla 4, 5 or 6 with AcyMailing 10 or 11 (tested on Joomla 5.4 and 6.2 with AcyMailing 10.10 and 11.1)
- PHP 8.1 or later with the OpenSSL extension
Nothing about your emails, your subscribers, opens or clicks reaches us: the plugin encrypts and decrypts the identifiers on your own site and sends no usage data. Joomla checks for updates at www.radarwave.it, as for every extension with an update server.
Released under the GNU GPL version 2 or later. The plugin makes identifiers unreadable, but it does not replace the privacy notice and consent, which remain the sender's responsibility.
